Evaluation

For this assignment we were asked to produce and record two, one hour radio shows. One of the radio shows we were asked to produce was a morning show which would be pre record and an afternoon show which would be recorded live on the day.
My job role for the morning show was to be a guest presenter, so I had to talk when asked a question and to take part in group discussions. We decided to base our morning show on a typical type of morning show such as the Chris Moyle’s show. We did this because when we researched what audiences liked in these types of shows, we found that a show like Chris Moyle’s fitted all the requirements as it is a show that is light hearted, funny, up to date and it contained relevant news updates.
I believe our morning show was a success as we filled our one hour slot to the second. This was due to our meticulous and careful planning. Planning proved vital as without it the show would not have been fluent and it would not have run as successfully as it did. Within this morning show we played various features and each of these features were played at the correct time. When we first considered doing this we doubted whether we would be able to do it as it required huge amounts of communication and team work. However, on the day it worked very well as we all communicated with each other and we found that we could work successfully and effectively as a team. Both John Wills and Brett Holwell’s presenting skills were excellent as they worked very well together. Both individuals have a great sense of humor which, I feel, is essential on a radio show as it is one of the few ways in which the presenter can engage with the audience especially as there are no visuals. However, when needed, both were very serious and professional very much like the BBC radio 1’s morning show.
I believe we only incurred a few faults within our morning show and these faults could have been easily avoided and could have been improved. Faults and weaknesses consisted of bad timings and a lack of communication in some areas. The Alice desk worker sometimes was delayed in fading in and out of features and music. This could be put down to a lack of communication between the team. However, I feel with more experience, practice and communication, this can easily be resolved and improved upon. Additionally, we ran out of subjects to talk about in between our songs and features. I do not feel this was due to poor planning because when we practiced we did not encounter this problem. Instead I feel that the pressure which we faced when we actually recorded affected us and therefore we didn’t perform to our best. However, again, with more practice and experience I feel we will be more confident and therefore we will have the ability and confidence to improvise and use our initiative, so, when we are faced with similar situations we will be able to overcome them. Overall, in order to have eliminated theses small faults we could of spent more time with the radio equipment and learnt the timings of the songs and features so we would know exactly when to fade in and out. Also to have avoided running out of subjects we could have wrote down an expansive list of subject areas we could have talked about and therefore we would not have encountered the problems we did as we would have had a contingency plan. Finally, before we were about to start we looked over the play list and noticed a few songs which were, what I believed, a little inappropriate for our show, not in the way that they were insulting or offensive but in the way that we set out to follow the same kind of codes and conventions as the BBC Radio 1. BBC Radio 1’s music theme is modern and contemporary music to get the listeners in the right mood for the day but on our play list we had a few songs which really weren’t appropriate. It was I who decided that our play list needed changing which was then agreed by the rest of the group. In order to avoid the last minute change, we should have looked over everything carefully to ensure that everything was correct. Additionally, throughout the planning we could have had ‘focus groups’. For example, after we made our first play list we could have all come together to review it to ensure that the play list remained focused and compatible with the Radio 1 theme.
Our second one hour show was broadcasted live on the 18th November so there was a lot of pressure to get it right. My job role on this show was to be the main presenter with Craig Smith as my co presenter as a group we decided for Craig and I to present this is because I believe the way we speak to, address and act towards a particular person will differ according to who we think they are so as we no our target audience as we are confident individuals the use of mode of address came easily to us. This role was very enjoyable and exciting as it was a very different experience for me. Being a presenter, I had to present the show and talk to the guests and introduce songs , this role consisted of a lot of planning as Craig and I needed to know what we were saying and what was being played at what times. Therefore, this role required Craig and myself to work closely and as part of a team in order to ensure the broadcast was fluent and professional. For this show I decided I didn’t want a script to follow and wanted to improvise the show which I believe was very effective. The reason why I felt I didn’t want a script was because I wanted the show to be as realistic as possible and I felt that if I had used a script it would have sounded very rehearsed and unprofessional. Although this placed a lot of pressure on me I feel that presenting and speaking publicly is a area in which I thrive in and it is something that I feel I can confidently do and therefore I felt it went successfully.
As a group running up to this live show we were very worried as were not given the play list until the day before so we were unsure of what we were playing at what times so we had a mad rush to sort it all out for the next day but with huge amounts of communication and team work we had it all sorted for the day of the live show and although our producer wasn’t present for personal reasons we managed to pull it all together. In having a set play list to follow I believe it was a huge help as it was all in order on Myriad so all we as the group had to do was to fit in our features and speech between the songs and this worked really well. If I had to make a criticism about our show it would be again about the topics we spoke about as we didn’t have enough information. But that would be my only criticism. I believe if I had to re-do this task I would apply a lot more thought and research so that our first show would be as good and successful as our live show.

PSB/Commercial radio

PSB stands for Public service broadcasting which includes television, radio and internet or anywhere else media audio can be heard.
The BBC is the main british public service broadcaster in the UK.
As the British public we all pay a licensing fee of £142.50 a year between April 2009 and March 2010, the fee has now gone up £145.50 a year for a television license and because of this we as the public expect an excelent quality of broadcasting.

Commercial Radio
All other commercial radio stations and t.v channels in the UK have to rely on advertisments to fund their programming. Commercial channels such as Galaxy FM, Heart FM and Touch fm etc.

Radio Analysis

I have analysed three different radio shows from, Radio 1 , radio 1 xtra and Asda fm. I have decided to choose these three radio shows becuase all the shows are completly different and I can try and understand what they do and why they do it to reach there specific audience.

Chris Moyles show (Radio 1)

This Show is the current BBC Radio 1 breakfast show in the UK, and has been since the 5th January 2004. From 2004 to 2007, the show was broadcast 6:55–10:00 every weekday, but since 15 October 2007 to present it has started from 6:30 am till 10:00 am. It is the longest running Radio 1 breakfast show in the station's history.
The show lasts three and a half hours, with news and sport read half-hourly between 06:30 and 10:00, except at 09:00. In the chris moyles show he often uses and upward inflection as he is always expressing his views and thaughts. The Music played on the show is new and up to date chart Music which i believe appeals to all ages.
Chris Moyles's Projection is always up beat and energetic i believe he does this to keep the audience interested. Although his projection and pitch us upbeat and loud he still doesnt go over the top as it is a morning show and doesnt want to be too loud as the audience will be chilled out. I believe chris speaks a normal medium pace through out his show. The morning show is very much a Talk show in which many different subjects are spoken about from celebrity gossip to sport to even there own personal lives, i say lives because the show has more than 1 presenter it has on avarege three co presenters, i believe this is very effective as it feels like your there with them as the all have onversations about every day subjects which we as an audience can all in some way relate to. The use of Pause on the Chris Moyles show is nearly unheard of as there are jingles and sound beds between conversations This is to keep the show exciting and flowing. The show Targets a wide range of ages (16+).
The mode of address of the Chris Moyles show is an direct/formal style of presenting.

Tim Westwood

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DBbFar2tL0&feature=fvst

I believe this show requires a spacific taste and believe the audience age range is from 16-25 this is because this show plays young music such as Rap, Hiphop, RandB and Garage. He hosts the drive time show on weekdays 16:00-19:00 this is also a prime time for this age range to listen as it is when everyone is on there way back from college or school.
Pitch:
Tim Westwood uses an increasing and descending inflections. He uses increased pitch in certain places like when he opens the show this tells you as a listener that he is very upbeat and excited and also very friendly with whoever he is talking to.
Pace:
The pace used throughout the show is fast in parts this again is part of his character and add excitment to the show.
Projection:
When Tim Westwood talks in to the microphone he adds effects to it like echo's and explosions to empower his voice and make the audience listen. He uses the personal zone to get through to the listeners that he is announcing something important.
Pause
There are no pauses right through his show. Tim Westwood chooses not to use many pauses in his show because he tries to keep the audience interested in what he is saying.
The Westwood show uses an direct/formal style of presenting to interact with theaudience.

Asda fm

http://www.asda.co.uk/corp/asda-fm.html

Asda have created there own radio station which is then played throughtout while customers are shopping. The music played is chart music old and new which targets all diffrent audiences it was launched on the 7th September 1991. The Asda station influences shoppers to by a particular product as they talk about whats on specail offer in the store. I believe the target audience for this station is for families between 20- 60. This is because i believe these are the ages of the people most likly to be shopping and to take notice of the station.
The presenter uses a very formal tone to his voice which for informing customers of whats in store, although he may sound dull he plays cheerfull jingles throughout to keep the audience interested.
The presenter doesnt pause much on Asda Fm also the presenter isnt always presant and a set playlist is playing. When there is a presenter there mode of address is direct because they are speaking directly to the customers. Mainly the show consists of adverts and upbeat songs for the all shoppers but also the show advertises offers and promotions for the customer.
Unlike radio one Chris moyles's show and 1xtras Tim westwoods show Asda fm is on a different platform as it is a (in-store-radio) which is only heard within an Asda store where as 1xtra and radio 1 can be heard world wide.

From analysing these three stations i can see how different each of them are be it on how they are presented to how there structured. from analysing theese i can see that that our Phresh fm show is very simular to the radio 1 Chris Moyles show. This is for many reasons as we have up beat presenters and up to date local exciting topics and music.

Secondary research

I have found important figures on RAJAR (The organisation which measures the profiles from the audience’s of all UK radio stations) about radio data that could help us with our radio programming.

http://www.rajar.co.uk/listening/quarterly_listening.php

As a group in doing this made us identify what radio stations are the most popular, then look at what they do in that particular radio station to make them so popular i.e music, style and presenting skills.

Treatment for Phresh fm

Format
We are going to pre - record the Afternoon show with myself and Craig but record the afternoon show with john and Brett live and also broadcast it on Stratcast live so there is an online option to listen to it free also a web cam will be on the studio so viewers can see us.
Duration
The length of both of our shows will be one hour long. We will be able to do this, as we will rehearse the shows before and time all the links. Also the scheduler on Myriad will allow us to keep track of the time.
Synopsis
Our morning show is going to be presented by Jon & Brett and there will be various of other guests. As the programme is music based the main content of the show will be the music. We have decided to play tracks that are modern and well known locally.
Style
The style of the show will be informal and chatty. As the show has two presenters, but having different guests on will make different topics very conversational with hopefully some humour.
Features
We have two features for our Phresh FM morning show. 'Where's Jon' is when Jon (our presenter) is describing a place in the world very vivdly and the audience who are listening are going to either log on facebook and tell us the answer or shout it as loud as they can where ever they are.
We also have a feature called the 'Quickfire Round' this feature is performed live in the studio as this will create a better competitive mood. The aim of the game is basically a word association game where the presenter says a word and the guest's have to link the word with another. We chose this feature as it allows the audience to get involved and try and think of a word faster than our actual guests.
Intended Audience
Our Phresh Morning show is targeting an audience of 16- 25 year olds. The presenting style and the features will therefore appeal to this age group. The show will be broadcasted around college and advertised on facebook and therefore will reach our target audience.
Rationale
We decided to do a show in the style of radio one where we can create an enjoyable show full of recent music and topics that will interest this audience. If the presenters are enjoying themselves then the audience will realise this and hopefully enjoy the show too.
Feasibility
This show idea is possible as there is an existing audience and they are easy to reach as the show is going to be broadcasted around the college on children in need and the students fit into the age group that we are targeting.
Budget
We will not need a budget for this show, as all the equipment is available from our college.

Focus Group

Focus Group
We held a focus group on the 1st October 2010 and We asked 6 people of the widest range we could from 16- 19, mixed gender and styles.
We showed them –
• A 5minute clip of radio 1 and what they thought
• A pre-recorder rehearsal of our shows and what they thought
• We let them listen to a couple of features and note their reaction
• We gave them a list of our draft playlists for both shows.
Reaction-
Radio 1 – “lively”, “fun games”, “interesting topics”, “too much talking not enough music”, “me and my family all listen together in the car and find it interesting even though we are all different ages”.
Our show- “I understand the angle they are coming from”, “technically flawed”, “enjoyed the range of music”, “music felt right for the time of day they said it would be played” “presenter seemed different and he should be more original.”
Reaction to features- Quick fire - they joined in with what they thought could be the next word, laughed. “I felt the quickfire round ended too soon but I joined in and had a laugh”
Guess that tune- “make the song harder to challenge audiences because that song was really easy”, “I like the idea of submitting my answer onto facebook because then I can ask for a song and look at the features it offers.”
Playlists- “they seem appropriate for time of day but the morning only has 6 songs in a hour!” “I like the idea of the news being every 15minutes as long as its not really long news cos that’s boring” “I really love the variety of bands in the afternoon show, I could sit with my friends who have different tastes and all enjoy it.”
We then asked them questions.
1. How would you compare our two presenters? “they have two different styles and they don’t connect with each other as one company” “Kris is a quick thinker and works well with his guests”
2. Which presenter did you relate to and why? “Jon as I could wake up to him and stay awake, he has quite an unusual tone” “Kris because his topics and his opinion match me and my interests”
3. How did you find their language and style? “Kris’ style fits in with the style of his show and so does Jon however they don’t fit as two presenters on one show” “Jon talks like he is a lot older, his language is a mega contrast to Kris who seems quite chavy”
4. Features? “I really enjoyed Quick Fire but I wanted it to last longer” “I liked the quiz, it was long but I felt the questions were cool and the contestants worked well together”
5. Do you feel the shows followed the company’s style? “the programs are so different” “yes I liked the morning chat and in the afternoon there was more music.”
6. Did you want to get involved? “I played along, if I was in my car I would have aswell” “the quick fire I will introduce to my mates, it would be well funny.”

Promotional Video

.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJXz3yGlFPU&feature=player_embedded

This is a link to our promotional video which is linked to our face book page so every one on facebook can see. For this promotional video i was the assistant editor. I believe this promo fits our target audience as i believe its fairly houmerous and entertaining. But i do believe that the song which is played as the protagonist is running is a bit dated and very cheesy and i believe that if a younger more recent song was played it could attract more viewers.
